Pickleball After 50: Game On!

Mastering Pickleball: 5 Essential Tips for Players Over 50

If you’re a 50+ pickleball player looking to improve your game and compete at a higher level, you’re in the right place. As a senior professional pickleball player with years of experience competing at the highest level, I’ve developed key strategies that have helped me stay competitive. These five tips specifically for players over 50, will build on each other, with the final tip transforming the way you think about the sport. Let’s dive in!

Tip #1 for Pickleball Players Over 50: Get to the Non-Volley Zone Line

One of the most crucial aspects of successful pickleball play is positioning. Research and expert analysis confirm that you gain a strategic advantage by getting to the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ) line—often called the kitchen—after every return of serve (Pickleball Strategy).

Many players make the mistake of hitting their returns too low and hard, leaving themselves little time to advance to the NVZ line. If you’re over 50, you may need to be intentional about giving yourself enough time to move forward. The key? Hit your return higher over the net to allow more time to transition from the baseline to the NVZ line. Doing so will put you in a dominant position for the rally.

Tip #2 for Pickleball Players Over 50: Always Expect a Hard Shot

Pickleball is a fast-paced game, and shots come at you quickly. To stay prepared, always expect that the next shot will be a hard one. Many players get lulled into expecting a slow dink, only to be caught off guard when their opponent speeds up the ball.

By adopting a mindset that anticipates fast shots, you’ll be ready to react. If a dink does come your way, you’ll have plenty of time to adjust. However, if you’re caught expecting a soft shot and receive a hard one instead, your reaction time will likely be too slow.  Even though you may be over 50 and playing against over 50 players, those hard shots are still coming. Tip #3 for Pickleball Players Over 50: Find the Right Ready Position for You

Now that you’re at the NVZ line and expecting fast shots, the next step is optimizing your paddle position. Younger players may hold their paddle low because they have quicker reflexes, but for pickleball players over 50, sports science suggests that a higher paddle position in your strike zone is more effective.

Your ready position should prioritize your backhand since it offers a wider defensive range than your forehand. Position your paddle at an angle that allows you to react quickly while also protecting your body. If body protection is your main priority, it’s fine to hold your paddle higher. The key is to find a balance between reaction time and coverage (Pickleball Paddle Positioning Guide).

Tip #4 for Pickleball Players Over 50 : Sometimes, the Best Shot is No Shot

A common mistake players make is attempting to return every shot, even when the ball is likely to land out. Studies on shot placement indicate that when an opponent attacks from inside the court, their shot has a higher chance of going out due to the short court length.

If a ball is coming toward your ribs or higher, consider letting it go rather than attempting to return it. While you might occasionally misjudge and let a ball land in, the overall strategy will save you more points than it costs. Trust the numbers—playing the percentages in pickleball is key to long-term success. Letting the ball go is also a great strategy for players over 50 as you will avoid a possible injury from going for a tough ball.  For more insights, check out this analysis from Better Pickleball.

Tip #5 for Pickleball Players Over 50: Play High-IQ Pickleball with a Strategic Framework

The smartest players don’t rely solely on power; they use strategy to control the game. One of the most important concepts in pickleball is understanding the significance of the NVZ.

Imagine playing pickleball without the kitchen—it would feel like a mini version of tennis. The NVZ is what makes pickleball unique, and learning how to use it both offensively and defensively will set you apart.

  • Defensively: When you’re in trouble, reset the point by placing the ball into the NVZ. This slows down the rally and gives you time to recover.
  • Offensively: Use dinks and soft shots to force opponents into making errors, either by hitting into the net or popping the ball up for an easy putaway.

By focusing on strategy instead of power, you’ll win more points without having to engage in firefights. This is where players over 50 have a real advantage.  Age brings with it experience and patience.  You can rock those youngsters as your ability to maintain your composure and control allows you to wait for the right opportunity to attack.  Learn more about strategic play at Better Pickleball.
