Pickleball Trends 2025 – Stay Ahead of the Game

As we roll into 2025, pickleball continues to evolve. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just picking up a paddle, staying ahead of emerging trends can elevate your game and help you to play your best.  In 2024, we saw some major shifts in three key areas: More Power, More Spin, and More Lobs. Let’s break down what these pickleball trends for 2025 mean for you and how to adapt your game for a great year.

Trend #1: The Game Is Getting Faster

Recent developments in paddle technology and player strategies are accelerating the pace of the game. Modern paddles now offer increased power and responsiveness, allowing players to hit harder and faster than ever. Combine this with a growing preference for aggressive gameplay, and you’ve got a recipe for electrifying rallies—and a unique challenge for players.

What It Means for You:

  • Stay Safe: With faster shots, the risk of accidental injuries rises. Protective eyewear is a smart investment for 2025.
  • Master the Soft Game: Don’t try to out-bang the banger. Even if you are a great banger, at some point, you are going to run into someone who hits it harder than you. What then? Instead, focus on softening the pace with effective drop shots and resets. These techniques use the court’s design—like the non-volley zone—to neutralize hard hitters.
  • Increase Reaction Time: Drills that improve reflexes and hand-eye coordination are essential. The faster the game, the quicker you need to respond.

Eyewear is more important than ever. My favorite for outdoors are the Blue Gearbox Glasses and clear for indoors

Trend #2: Spin Takes Center Stage

Spin isn’t new to pickleball, but paddles are making it more accessible—even to players without advanced technique which is why spin lands in the list of pickleball trends for 2025. Topspin, underspin, and even sidespin have been common on serves, but paddle technology is helping players to add more spin to dinks, and third-shot drops. While spin can be a powerful weapon, it comes with a warning: not every player needs it, and poorly executed spin can lead to more errors than advantages.

What It Means for You:

  • Decide If It’s Right for You: Unless you’re already consistent with your shots, adding spin might do more harm than good. Focus on consistency first. (Spoiler alert: every pickleball shot has some amount of spin because of how the paddle travels and trying to add more spin is the downfall of consistency for most players)
  • Learn to Handle Opponent Spin: Recognize spin by watching the paddle’s position at the start of your opponent’s swing. Adjust your positioning accordingly. Topspin will bounce high, underspin will stay low, and sidespin will curve in the direction the players paddle moved when they hit the shot. Most players miss spins because their bodies are not in the right position and that creates an inconsistent stroke mechanic.
  • Practice Spin Defense: Instead of overthinking the shot, focus on solid body positioning. The more balanced you are, the easier it is to counteract spin’s effects.

Trend #3: More Lobs

Once considered a niche or defensive move, lobs are used more and more frequently—even at the pro level. In high-stakes matches, we’ve seen top players integrate lobs as a way to regain control, reset points, or catch opponents off guard. With this trend trickling down to amateur courts, every player should be prepared to deal with a well-placed lob.

What It Means for You:

  • Anticipate the Lob: Learn to recognize when an opponent is likely to lob based on their tendencies, positioning, and paddle angle.
  • Improve Your Coverage: The key to defending against lobs is efficient footwork. Practice opening the door as your first move so you can move back safely and quickly.
  • Add It to Your Arsenal: Lobs aren’t just a defensive tool—they can be a clever way to disrupt your opponent’s rhythm. Consider incorporating them strategically into your own game.

Staying Ahead in 2025

The beauty of pickleball is that it is constantly changing. There is so much lies in its balance of strategy and spontaneity. As these trends evolve, players who embrace them thoughtfully—not impulsively—will find the most success on the court. Remember, it’s not about chasing every new technique or piece of gear. It’s about refining your game, one intentional step at a time.
