Pickleball Rules-Is an Erne Legal
Do you know that you are allowed to stand anywhere on or off the court at any time during play?
The only exception is when you are serving. You must stand behind the baseline and between an imaginary extension of the center line and the side line. You are not allowed to move so far right or left that you would cross those line extensions.
An Erne shot is a shot made outside of the kitchen/NVZ (non-volley zone) and off to the side of the court in the out of bounds area. This allows for an “easier reach” to hit a ball earlier and closer towards the net and thus downwards to the opposing team. Since the NVZ is 2-dimensional and doesn’t extend imaginary/continuously to the outsides of the court, this makes this shot possible.
