Are you over 50 and looking to level up your pickleball game? You’re not alone—and you’re in the right place.
This blog is a response to the many questions we received after our original video, “Five Things I Do as a Senior Professional Pickleball Player.” Today, we’re diving into five common mistakes that players over 50 should avoid, along with two offensive strategies that will help you win more points and enjoy the game longer. (Don’t miss #4—it’s a game-changer when playing against bangers!)
Why Listen to This Advice?
There are countless voices in the pickleball world, but here’s why this one matters:

I’m a 55-year-old senior pro player—so I live and breathe what it’s like to play well over 50.
Five Things to Avoid (or Rethink) If You’re An Over 50 Pickleball Player
1. Jumping into Spin Too Soon
Spin can be exciting—but tricky. Many players add spin before mastering the fundamentals, leading to more errors than winners. Consider whether it’s the right time for you to focus on spin. You might get better results by dialing in your placement, footwork, and consistency first.
2. Low Ready Position
You may see young pros holding their paddles low—but for 50+ pickleball players, that often leads to missed shots or slow reactions. Instead, keep your paddle at chest height. This gives you a quicker response time, especially against fast drives.
3. Using the Wrong Grip
The grip you use affects every shot you hit. For most players, the continental grip provides the best balance. It offers flexibility on both forehand and backhand, and helps prevent pop-ups when defending hard shots.
🎯 Tip: Avoid extreme grips that make it hard to dink or volley effectively.
4. Trying to Hit Everything—Even What’s Going Out
This one’s big: Let balls go out. When playing younger, hard-hitting opponents, one of your best strategies is knowing when not to swing. Step out of the way and let the ball sail long. Many will.
📊 This is a percentage play—don’t aim for 100% accuracy. Aim for long-term gains.
✅ Bonus tip: Expect the hard shot before it comes so you can prepare early.
5. Ignoring Strategy and Court IQ
One of your biggest assets as a 50+ pickleball player is your brain. Use it. Understand the non-volley zone (NVZ) not just as a rule, but as a strategic tool. Incorporating the NVZ into your plan will help you control rallies, force errors, and win more points.
🧠 This is about playing smarter, not harder.
Two Offensive Strategies for Smarter 50+ Pickleball Play
Now that we’ve looked at what to avoid, let’s talk about two great offensive strategies that work especially well for senior players.
Offensive Strategy #1: The Kitchen Lob
Use the NVZ to your advantage. If your opponents are crowding the net, lob over their heads from the kitchen line. This forces them to backpedal, resetting the rally and giving you breathing room.
🔥 Pro tip: Make it a surprise weapon—not your go-to shot.
Offensive Strategy #2: The Baseline Lob
When you’re pushed deep, don’t just dink or drive. A well-timed lob from the baseline can catch aggressive players off guard, especially if they’ve crept in too far.
💡 This shot can turn defense into offense instantly.
