Pickleball Footwork: This Ain’t Sexy Pickleball, But It Wins Games

Mastering Pickleball Footwork: A Guide to Better Movement and Winning Games

What’s sexy in pickleball? For many players, it’s hitting an Erne or an ATP (around the post). Those shots feel exhilarating—moments where we become kings or queens of the court. But let’s face it, most of us will only get a chance to hit one of those shots every 30 games. While they’re exciting, there’s something far more impactful you can focus on to improve your game consistently: pickleball footwork.

In this blog, we’ll explore how better footwork can make you faster, more efficient, and ultimately, a more successful pickleball player. Whether you’re a casual player or competing in the 50+ division, mastering movement fundamentals will give you a competitive edge.

Why Pickleball Footwork Matters

Pickleball rewards quick, precise movement. While shots like the Erne and ATP are flashy, most points are won with strong positioning and efficient movement. Proper footwork allows you to:

  • Reach shots faster: Reduce time spent running to the ball.
  • Recover effectively: Get back into position for the next shot.
  • Stay balanced: Avoid falling or being out of place during crucial rallies.

Good footwork isn’t just for the pros. Even recreational players benefit from improved movement, which can help you dominate the non-volley zone, control the court, and minimize errors.

The Drill: A Footwork Exercise for All Levels

This drill combines forward, backward, lateral movement, and the essential split step, making it a well-rounded exercise for pickleball players. It can be adjusted to match your skill level, so whether you’re a beginner or advanced player, this drill will help.

Setup:

You’ll need three objects (cones, water bottles, or any markers) to form a V shape on the court. Place one marker at the back (near the baseline) and two markers toward the center of the court, about the width of the non-volley zone apart.

Instructions:

  1. Start at the back marker with your paddle in hand, staying in the ready position.
  2. Sprint forward to the first marker.
  3. Perform a split step (feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, weight on the balls of your feet).
  4. Move around the marker without looking down, using lateral motion to return to the back marker.
  5. Repeat this motion in a figure-eight pattern, alternating between sprinting forward, split steps, and lateral movement.

Key Tips for Success

To get the most out of this drill, focus on these critical points:

  1. Stay Low: Keep a slight bend in your knees throughout the drill. Standing too tall can make you lose balance or topple over during quick directional changes.
  2. Engage Your Split Step: Your split step should be light and on the balls of your feet. Avoid heavy thuds, which indicate poor balance or slow reaction time.
  3. Look Up: On the court, you can’t afford to look at your feet. Keep your eyes forward and focus on staying aware of your surroundings.

Making it a Workout

This drill doesn’t just improve your footwork—it’s also an excellent cardio workout. Try the following interval routine:

  • 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off
  • Repeat for 5 minutes

You’ll be huffing, puffing, and ready to dominate your next game!

Why This Drill Works

This exercise incorporates all the movement types you’ll encounter in a pickleball match:

  • Forward and backward sprints
  • Lateral shuffles
  • Split-step recovery

By practicing these motions together, you’ll develop muscle memory and enhance your ability to react quickly during matches.
