If you are serving, then the serve is the most important shot. That’s how points are earned. If you are on the return sided, then that’s the most important shot. But overall, I can see why the return of serve might be the most important because it gives the player more control of the game, getting the ball back to serve and making points.
Based on my understanding of the implications of the framework presented I am still in doubt between ROS or 4th shot. Let say: ROS, 4th, Serve, 3rd.
I agree Sergey. If you miss the ROS, you lose a point. If you miss the 4th shot, you lose a point. So consequentially I think these are two most important shots. Then the serve, because if you miss the serve, you don’t give your opponent an opportunity to gift you a point. Then the 3rd shot because again you don’t give your opponent an opportunity to gift you a point.
1. Serve-If you can’t get the serve in you can’t play the game nor have a chance to score.
2.Return-from the return side point of view only.
3-Third shot-In my opinion the third shot drop or drive is the most important shot-I know I don’t have numerically in sequence but I have found for me the third shot drop sets everything up in rec play.
4.Fourth shot.
agree with your comment on the 3rd shot
Always thought 3rd shot was most important, but after reviewing workshop 1, it must be ROS, to “keep them back”!
Return of Serve
1. Return the ball deep
2. Keeps the serving team back
3. 3rd shot drops are more difficult from the baseline area
1 – ROS, if you don’t keep them back with your first shot, it’s tough to back them up with your second (4th)
2 – 4th, gotta keep the positional advantage
3 – 3rd, they don’t have to let it bounce, so if you don’t get it right you’re likely eating plastic.
4 – Serve, yeah, you gotta get it in, but they have to let it bounce which means it has lost steam and and given you time.
1. Return of serve to keep serving team back
2. Serve must be in or lose the serve & possibility of earned points
3. Tie for 3rd or 4th shot
1. ROS Consequences: if you miss the ROS your giving your opponent a point
2. 4th shot Consequences: ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ”
3. Serve Consequences: if you miss your serve you lose the opportunity to get a point but, your opponent will not score a point on your error. I put the serve as #3 because if you never make your serve you will never have the opportunity to score points.
4. 3rd shot Consequences: if you miss the third shot you are the serving team and will not score a point, but neither will your opponent.
Given the Return Side of play prevents the other team from scoring, I’m thinking the order of consequential shots are:
1. ROS – to get to NVZ to prevent other team from scoring
2. 4th shot – to keep other team back
3. Serve – get the Serve in – we can’t score without a valid serve
4. 3rd shot – to get to NVZ so we can score
1. 3rd Shot – You are the serve team so you are on the point. Your opponents on the return side have the built in advantage of the 2 bounce rule. Hitting a solid 3rd either via drop or drive sets you up to neutralize that advantage or earn a point/reset the advantage. Thus leading you to hopefully more points.
2. Return Of Serve – As the returner you’re off the point so you need to win the rally to get back on point. By returning deep and keeping your opponents back, your team can reach the NVZ via the 2 bounce rule advantage and hopefully set yourself up to win the rally and get back on point.
3. Serve – So so so important. I want to rank this higher but the fact is almost no one without flukes or luck is getting an 11-0 game on aces alone. You can have the best serves and placement in the world and still not score on the serve every time. Look at the pros. That being said, it’s an incredibly important shot and may very well be the 2nd most important. It’s that close. I just put it lower on the list because if you can’t return your opponents serves you’ll never be on your own unless they hit it out or into the net which may not always happen.
4. 4th – Process of elimination. It’s an important shot but right now I don’t believe it can be placed higher on the list.
Given that the serve has no “opposition”, ie, the opposing player will be behind the baseline, the serve is least consequential here. The ROS is most consequential given it can keep the opposition pinned back fully. The 3rd and 4th shots are next given the dynamics of opposition and your position.
From the Return Side perspective, 1)ROS as placement will keep them back. 2) 4th shot to keep them back
From Server Side perspective, 1) Serve, has to be in to have the chance to score 2) 3rd shot drop should be good enough so I can move in an remove their advantage
ROS
3rd Shot
4th Shot
Serve
Ranked in order is ROS, 4th, 3rd, serve. ROS keeps opponets back so 4th is just as important. 3rd is next and serve is least consequential.
1 – ROS, Hit it deep to keep your opponent back. Also, if you miss it, you’ve gifted a point.
2 – 4th, Hit it deep to keep your opponent back. Again, gifted point if you miss it.
3 – 3rd. Need to hit it correctly to give your side time to get to the NVZ.
4 – Serve. Need to get it in to start the rally and hit it deep to make it more difficult for your opponent to get to the NVZ.
1. ROS important to keep opponent deep
2. Serve – can’t get the point if the serve is missed
3. 3rd
4 4th
ROS-keep serving team back allowing ros side to have advantage in position at NVZ.
4th-continue to keep ‘em back and have positional advantage
Serve—points c an be scored if serve is good
3rd-allows positional advantage in getting to nvz
1. ROS
2. 4th shot
3. Serve
4. 3rd shot drop
I tend to focus on my ROS because I don’t want to give points away or allow my opponents to come to the NVZ, and I focus on my serve depth and placement in hopes of keeping my opponents from getting to the NVZ.
Agree with Jim G but for different reasons:
1 – ROS, if you don’t keep them back with your first shot, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to back them up with your second (4th). AND if you miss you lose the point.
2 – 4th, gotta keep the positional advantage. AND if you miss you lose the point.
3 – 3rd, this is the most difficult shot in PB and it’s your best chance to get to the NVZ.
4 – Serve, even if you hit a good one, because of the two-bounce rule, you don’t get too much of an advantage.
I need to pay more attention to my ROS!!!!!
1. ROS -you can only miss 10 in a game and still win -comes before the 4th
2. 4th -can only miss 10 in a game and still win
3. Serve -need to serve in to score
4. 3rd -least important of these choices
For the receiving team the important shots are
2nd and 4th that’s were the points are lost
1. ROS
2. Serve – to make their ROS difficult. Also easiest to practise
3. 4th shot
4. 3rd shot
Every point has Serve and ROS. That’s why for me they are most important to me
1. RETURN IOF SERVE
2. 4TH SHOT
3. SERVE
4. 3RD SHOT
ANY SHOT BY THE RECEIVING TEAM, WHICH DOES NOT GO OVER THE NET AND LAND IN THE COURT, IS MOST CONSEQUENTIAL AS THE SERVERS WILL SCORE A POINT. SINCE WINNING IS MEASURED BY HOW MANY POINTS YOU SCORE VERSUS HOW MANY POINTS ARE SCORED BY YOUR OPPONENTS, SCORING POINTS IS THE MOST CONSEQUENTIALLY IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO. WHEN YOU MISS A SHOT AS A SERVER, THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN IS YOU LOSE THE SERVE. WHEN YOU MISS A SHOT AS A RECEIVER, THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN IS THAT THE SERVERS WIN A POINT.
1. ROS- keep the opponents deep
2. 3rd shot- so I can get to the NVZ
3. 4th shot- start setting up the point
4. Serve- rarely do i get a gift
1.ROS to keep opponents deep
2. 4th shot, to keep them deep
Not sure about serve or 3rd?
The 2 most important shots consequentially are both on the return side.
ROS
4th shot
Followed by the 3rd shot, then the serve.
2-3-1-4
4-ROS-3-S
ROS, 3rd, 4th, Serve
!. ROS 2. 3rd 3, Serve 4. 4th
I try to keep track of my errors as I play per game and in my head analyze other player’s errors.
It’s hard to remember it all once home to reflect. I try my best to assess as I go.
I think ROS is the most important, then the 4th shot so that you can keep serving team back, then 3rd shot, and last the serve. Of course, it helps to have a good quality serve, return, 3rd and 4th — but that’s why we’re all here – to make moves toward improving each of these.
1. ROS
2. 4 th shot
3. serve
4. 3 rd shot
ROS
4th shot
Serve
3rd shot
First two shots poorly executed result in loss of points, the most consequential result
Serve must get in to start the rally
3rd shot drop or drive is a function of the quality of the return
1. ROS – take advantage of two bounce rule and establish positional advantage
2. 3d Shot – mitigate positional advantage
3. 4th shot – maintain positional advantage, give opponent the chance to give a gift…
4. Serve – must go in to have a chance to score
Serves are rarely aces – even deep low hard serves to the backhand come back most of the time. ROS determines where the serving team hits the third shot. Too much pace on ROS doesn’t give you time to run up to the NVZ. So ROS is very important. Third shot is the most difficult due to positional disadvantage. 4th shot just keep them back rather than trying for outright winners.
ROS. YOU MUST RETURN THE SERVE TO STAY IN THE GAME
Serve. If you can’t get your serve in you can’t score points
3rd. This can either win the point or set up your 4th shot for a winner
4th. Keep your opposing back and on defense.
ROS
3rd Shot
Serve
4th Shot
Return of Serve. Goes a long way toward letting you regain the serve and win points. If you don’t return the serve, they win a point and there’s extra pressure on you. Especially, if this happens several times.
3rd – Keep your opponents at a positional disadvantage or score a point.
Serve. Every serve missed revitalizes your opponent and is an an opportunity for them to take control.
4th. Keep your opposing back gives you time to achieve the positional advantage of being at the net able the ability to direct balls where they have a hard time getting to them.
1. Serve
2. Return of Serve
3. 3rd shot
4. 4th shot
1-ROS. Have to keep serving team back
2-4th shot cont keep them back
3-3rd dro shot
4-serve
1. ROS-no gifts
2. 4th-no gifts
3. Serve- can’t score if you don’t get it in
4. 3rd-get to the net with a chance to score
1. Return of Serve – this sets the tone for the rally, determines 3rd shot of opponent, and keeps the opponent from scoring/winning
2. 4th shot – missing this shot also allows the opponent to score
3. Serve – gotta score to win
4. 3rd shot – selection can vary, but doesn’t determine key factor in game
1. ROS
2. 4th shot
3. Serve
4. 3rd shot drop
1. Serve
2. ROS
3. 3rd shot
4. 4th shot
This order is based on me doing the serving
1.serve
2. ROS
3. 3rd shot
4. 4th shot
ROS
Serve
3rd shot
4th shot
1. 3rd shot is most important in my opinion because it determines how the rest of the game may be played. If long, then returning side stays back and you have time to get to nvz and manipulate the game. Or if right inside kitchen where they can’t run to and return, you have scored.
2. ROS is next because it keeps serving team back so you can be positioned at nvz and manipulate game. Or, as above, strategically placed in kitchen where it cannot be reached in time to play.
3. Serve must keep the returning team far back. If not, you have moved them to the nvz and given them the advantage.
4. 4th shot, the momentum has already been determined by first 3 shots.
