#163- Managing Your Negative Self-Talk | Special Episode with CJ Johnson

Positive self talk is key to success in any sport. How you think is how you will perform, whether we’re an athlete or not.

Unfortunately, most of the internal self-talk is negative. As human beings, it’s so much easier to say and believe something that’s negative versus something that’s positive.

I’ve been mulling over the idea of self-talk for the past few weeks, specifically the impact of our self-talk on our performance on the pickleball courts. What can we do when it happens to us out on the pickleball court?

The first step is to recognize our negative self-talk and to identify the situations that trigger the negative self-talk. The ten-second rule can help turn negative thoughts into positive ones and asking oneself if one would be friends with themselves if they spoke to themselves in that way is another useful technique.

Listen to this episode as I share with you a case scenario of demanding situations like The Ryder Cup which over the past 30 years has shown that the home crowd has a major advantage. Find out what we can put in place when negative talk happens and perfect examples of negative self-talks that destroy our confidence.

Hola. Hello. Konichiwa. After 40 years playing tennis, I am now a full-time pickleball player and professional. As a 5.0 rated Senior Pro Pickleball Player and an IPTPA-certified Master Teaching Professional, my focus is on helping players like you learn to play their best pickleball. In 2016, shortly after starting to play pickleball, my friend Tom and I jumped into the highest division at the first US Open in Naples, Florida. That morning it became clear just how much there is to learn in this seemingly simple sport – a lifetime of learning if you so choose. Since 2018, I have been on a mission to share my knowledge of pickleball so other players can enjoy the game at a higher level and attain their pickleball objectives. When not studying or playing pickleball, I like to travel with my other half, Jill.
