#151- Mailbag Episode – The Open Play Blues and Mixed Troubles

In this Mailbag Episode, we are going to cover 5 really interesting areas:

1.     What happens when you maybe are viewed as having stayed behind your friend?
We want to play with better players which is great but let’s also remember to play with the players who are not yet where we are. Let’s lead that ladder down and help them climb up those rugs on the ladder.
2.     How to play with a significant other when there is a disparity in level
When you’re heading out to the courts,  preset yourself to be ready for your significant other to hit a nice shot and for you to be able to look across the net and just be able to say, That’s a great shot!
3.     Keeping track of rules changes – or what should we focus on?
One rule recently was the elimination of the pre spun ball on the serve- that was a big change.
4.     An amazing story of partial recovery from a serious physical ailment through pickleball
5.     The Open Play Blues – you are not going to want to miss this advice

Hola. Hello. Konichiwa. After 40 years playing tennis, I am now a full-time pickleball player and professional. As a 5.0 rated Senior Pro Pickleball Player and an IPTPA-certified Master Teaching Professional, my focus is on helping players like you learn to play their best pickleball. In 2016, shortly after starting to play pickleball, my friend Tom and I jumped into the highest division at the first US Open in Naples, Florida. That morning it became clear just how much there is to learn in this seemingly simple sport – a lifetime of learning if you so choose. Since 2018, I have been on a mission to share my knowledge of pickleball so other players can enjoy the game at a higher level and attain their pickleball objectives. When not studying or playing pickleball, I like to travel with my other half, Jill.

Do you watch the ball as it touches your paddle. What I don’t here on YouTube instructions in rec play to watch the direction the opponent’s paddle is facing on their ball return to give you advanced knowledge of the ball direction.
    Thank you

Hi Dennis, technically it’s impossible to watch the ball touch the paddle, it’s moving too fast. But you do watch the ball into the paddles strike zone. As far as the direction you opponents paddle is facing, the closer you get to your opponent the more difficult that becomes. AT that point it’s easier for most players to watch the body movement of their opponents verses the paddle position.

Really enjoyed this podcast. Especially about leaving the ladder down. Every player starts somewhere and I believe we need to pay it forward. People helped us get to where we are, so help out the beginners, make it fun for them. The 4.5+ players in my area keep their group exclusive, and it makes me sad. It’s supposed to be a community, not cliques.
