#144- Lost in the Pickleball Jungle? PLUS To Target or Not To Target

I want you to understand that you really have to start from a point of a different perspective than the one that perhaps you’re used to.

I got an email from a gentleman named David, in response to last week’s podcast where I talked about the Pickleball Therapist idea. And this is not just Dave’s story, but anybody’s, when you’re actually not playing because of this conflict that you’re feeling.

We’re going to talk about a little bit in terms of how to deal with feeling lost out there.

A really important thing to remember is normally you’re playing with friends, sometimes really good friends, close friends, sometimes with acquaintance type friends, but nonetheless, they are friends.

Winning and losing as a metric may not be helpful- It’s how we basically score the games.  And a better metric is what you come to play for. As long as you’re getting those things, you’re getting what you came for.

In this episode I’ll give you some suggestions on how you can reframe what you’re going through and perhaps feel a little differently about the way you’re playing pickle ball and about your relationship with the sport in general, not just each time you play.

Chapters:

00:00- Feeling Lost with Pickleball

04:23 – Dealing with Pickleball Conflict: Understanding the Lizard Brain and Perspective

08:41 – Improving Your Relationship With Pickleball

12:57 – Finding Your Way Again- Celebrating The Good In Pickleball & Life

17:02 – In the Riff- targeting

In the Riff, I talk about targeting, where you target a particular player in match play, when it’s the right thing to do and when it should be reconsidered.

You’re better off seeing some shots from the player that might be a little bit better than you right now, so you can see what’s going on out there. And also to encourage that player to come back and play with you again.

Hola. Hello. Konichiwa. After 40 years playing tennis, I am now a full-time pickleball player and professional. As a 5.0 rated Senior Pro Pickleball Player and an IPTPA-certified Master Teaching Professional, my focus is on helping players like you learn to play their best pickleball. In 2016, shortly after starting to play pickleball, my friend Tom and I jumped into the highest division at the first US Open in Naples, Florida. That morning it became clear just how much there is to learn in this seemingly simple sport – a lifetime of learning if you so choose. Since 2018, I have been on a mission to share my knowledge of pickleball so other players can enjoy the game at a higher level and attain their pickleball objectives. When not studying or playing pickleball, I like to travel with my other half, Jill.

We have a 50 plus group that i started playing with few years ago. Now if i do go its purely social since i know the ball will not be hit my direction even when thats the correct shot. The hard part is not to let bad habits creep into your game. It’s interesting listening to players talk about don’t hit to this player. If i have built a relationship with them i will ask why and try for them to have a light bulb moment.
